Ashley 2nd XI vs Macclesfield 3rd XI (Away) – 14/05/2016
Ashley 2s continued their perfect start to 2016 with a superb win away to a strong Macclesfield 3rd team.
Macc won the toss, choosing to bat first on what looked a very good batting track. Bryan Jones however soon put the hosts under pressure with 2 wickets in the first over with one caught at cover and the other plum in front of all three. Macc looked to rebuild, with Bryan testing both Batsmen and Najeeb bowling with good pace, unluckily conceding a few boundaries. Bryan then got Khan bowled for 28, resistant opener Moores for 17 and Longshaw for 23 leaving the score 78-5 off 16. The 100 run partnership between Key and Barker looked to have Macc in control, but Morfitt got Key caught brilliantly by Najeeb to cause a lower order collapse. Najeeb was unlucky not to take a wicket, bowling very well to restrict Macc to minimal runs off his final overs, whilst Morfitt taking 4 wickets and Bryan Jones running out Barker gave Ashley 4 bowling points and a target of 194 to chase.
The chase started poorly for Ashley, with Plant and Morfitt both back in the pavilion with 22 on the board. Opener Evans batted fluently to keep the scoreboard ticking, alongside John Brownhill who looked to rebuild the innings. John was caught off the impressive Key who ended with 3 wickets, before James Semple smashed a quick 40 before playing on. Dec Cavanagh came in and batted steadily, untroubled by any of the bowling and saw Ashley home with 18* alongside debutant Usman Ahmad. Ashley chased 194 for the loss of 5 inside the 39th over.
A great win against testing opposition which is a good sign for the rest of the season
