Ashley 2nd XI vs Stockport Trinity 2nd XI (Home) – 21/05/2016
2s made it 100/100 and went top of the league with an impressive win over unbeaten Stockport Trinity at HQ.
Skipper Morfitt won the toss and put Trinity in to bat, on a gloomy day with a green looking wicket. Jones opened up, testing the opening batsmen with the ball not swinging much surprisingly. Najeeb opened from the other end, getting opener Rixon caught behind by Wimbury after a loose shot. Other opener Jones then retired hurt after slipping. Najeeb bowled with great pace, combining well with the accuracy of Jones. Walker was them caught by Wimbury, his second of 5 catches, off the bowling of Jones. Twidell fell for 6 off Najeeb’s bowling before a steady partnership between Jones and Cairns(!) took the score to 106-3. Cairns fell for 49 after some lusty blows and Jones fell shortly after for a well made 28, Najeeb and Foster taking the wickets respectively. The tail didn’t resist much, with only Dodangoda surviving long for 21. Morfitt and Najeeb shared the final 4 wickets with the latter missing out on a hat trick. He ended up with 6 wickets deservingly after a great start to the season with no return. Trinity finished 153 all out
The in form pairing of Evans and Murray opened for the hosts, and comfortably saw off the openers before Murray was caught well in the deep leaving the score 37/1. Semple walked to the crease looking to up the tempo and did just that, scoring 42* in the end. Evans fell for 48 leaving Horn to see Ashley home with 32* finishing with a 6 over long on.
Another solid win for Ashley who go to Timperley next week for a table topping local derby.
