Ashley CC 3rd XI vs Heaton Mersey CC 3rd XI

Heaton Mersey won the toss and elected to field

Heaton Mersey 3rds completed a dominant win over Ashley, similar to both games last season. The toss looked all important on a cloudy day and Burgess was asked to bat on a surface which was difficult to get set on. Matt and Mike started watchfully, successfully navigating the opening spells of Hassan and Glare. At 30-0, the top 3 were removed in quick succession by the slow left-arm of Entwistle; who showed good control, and Backhari who used the surface to his advantage cutting the ball away consistently on a difficult length. James and Ollie threatened to put a partnership together, until James fell caught in the deep to Entwistle and Ollie was clean bowled by Iqbal. 56-4 soon became 80 all out, with Zeeshan and Steve falling to top-drawer catches from Ingham and Entwistle.

Needing to make early in roads and hoping to exert pressure on the batsmen, Ashley were put on the back foot by the aggressive batting of Humpage; sticking Mike onto the batting nets and into the adjoining field in consecutive overs, and punishing anything short or wide. It took a good delivery from Jamie to remove him for 32. Mike turned to the spin of ‘The Real JC’ Cheetham who bowled a consistent line and looked to spin the ball, removing Hassan with the mystery ball which hit the base of the stumps on the second bounce. Jamie (The Other Other JC) bowled a cracking spell taking 2 wickets, and was followed by Zeeshan who also picked up a wicket, but unfortunately our batting let us down on the day and we’ll all have to start contributing more if we want to give our bowlers a chance.
