Academy XI vs Glazebury 2nd XI (Home) – 23/04/2016
Match Ball Sponsor: Steve Busby
The newly formed Academy started their season with a home match at Mere where the ground and the wicket looked in great order. The side included 7 under 13s all making their debut in senior cricket and Alex Simpson, making her return to the game after 10 years; her ground fielding and throwing proved to be outstanding.
Ashley won the toss and invited Glazebury to bat first. Oli Mazarelo opened from the Knutsford Road end and seemed to have made a break through when Griffiths claimed a catch off the edge of Nutkins bat but the appeal was turned down.
The openers added 55 before Darren Griffiths found the edge and a sharp catch at slip dismissed the opener for 36.
Gattu took his first senior wicket when he bowled Bean for 17 with the score on 72.
Mazarelo returned for a second spell and he nipped one back into the pads of Aussie Meulman who fell short of a deserved hundred.
Some late order hitting took the Warrington side to 256 for 7 off 45 overs, Haris Nuthrapali bowled Nicholson for 34 and Cavanagh threatened his personal best figures with a late 2 for.
Ashley were reduced to 17 for 5 with all batsmen bowled, the seaming ball proving difficult to keep out.
A 12 over partnership of 60 followed between Mazarelo and Griffiths and they appeared to have the measure of the bowlers. The introduction of McCue (3 for 15 off 3.2 overs) put paid to any hope of salvaging a draw. Srikar Gattu overcame a nervous start to add a further 28 runs with Griffiths but with 3 overs left Simpson was bowled to give Glazebury a convincing 134 run win.
Results are not a priority in the this team but we hope to be more competitive in future matches, statrting with a trip to Sandbach School next Saturday to play their hosts 3rd team
