3s travelled to Ashton on Mersey CC for the opening league fixture of the year. Skipper Josh Wardle won the toss and on a very green track elected to bowl. Skipper opened with himself and Jamie Crowhurst, however found tough going with AOMs opener Gary Essue scoring heavily early on. Jamie found the breakthrough after having a caught behind appeal turned down, removing the no2 batsmen lbw for 10. Filled with confidence 4 balls later he struck again clean bowling the skipper for 0. With Josh Wardle having no luck with his first spell the changes were made with Mike Burgess replacing the skipper and Stuart Wilkinson coming on to replace Jamie. Both slowed the run rate causing the next wicket, as they went for a quick run Alfie Johnston struck with a fantastic throw in to Mike for a run out. Next to the party was Stuart dismissing the opener lbw for 55 quickly followed by their no5 for 0, bowled wilkinson caught James Semple (just) With the temperature high the skipper rung the changes again and in brilliant fashion, Jamie struck again removing the no6 with the skipper then removing 7 and 8 in 2 balls, missing out on the hattrick. Jamie bagged his 4th with his last ball of the over and josh 2 balls later removed the final wicket leaving AOM all out for 168.
Matt Lamming and John Brownhill started the chase using the quick outfield to accumulate runs whilst watching out for the low bounce which made it difficult going for both teams. Lammo fell for 15 with one that kept low bowled him. Mike Burgess went in at 3 and added 14 before very unluckily dragging on to the stumps. In amongst the wickets JB was slowly building his innings and proving a great anchor for the team. Joseph Busby was in at 4, played a wonderful cover drive for 4 before playing at a wide one only to find the point fielder. In came the entertainer James Semple, the fireworks began with lovely shots being played all around the park and in no time at all we found ourselves closing in on the victory. James brought up his 50, his 3rd of the season, then falling for 55 going for the big 6 to win the game. Alfie Johnston was in next but fell for 0 attempting the same trick as James, all the while JB was stranded on 46 with 2 runs required, Oliver Griffiths was then dismissed LBW 0 (Jamie Crowhurst bow your head in shame) Josh Wardle in next but end of the over left JB on strike, following James’ idea john slapped one over cover for four, his 50 brought up in a solid innings and the big 25 to start the season! A great team effort and performance. Next week 3s travel to Woodford CC for our home leg due to the 1s Cup Game at HQ.
