Ashley Sunday 3rd XI vs Woodford 3rd XI (Home) – 15/05/2016 (Played at Woodford CC)
3s travelled to Woodford CC for the 2nd league game of the season for their home leg due to the 1st team cup fixture. On another bright sunny day skipper Josh Wardle won the toss and elected to bowl. Opening with himself he hit the perfect line and length from the start, opening with a maiden. Jamie Crowhurst opened with Josh and whilst struggling to hit the same line and length found a perfect one straight through the opener taking the off stump. Josh next over found the edge to Matt Lamming at slip, Woodford 2 down for 9. Next over Jamie struck again, the batsmen trying to get through point only to find “buckets” John Cheetham. What a start!! Woodford’s 4 and 5 then steadied the ship as Stuart Wilkinson struggled to find a consistent line and length, finding the edge a few times unfortunately never in the direction of a fielder. They cashed in on the bad balls for the runs, Pete Burgess bowling with superb control from the other end in a 10 over spell that went for just 17 and crucially found the 4th wicket after a strong 35 from the youngster, caught at cover by Tom Yates. Also causing the 5th wicket as the batsmen edged through slips as he thought, only for the injured Jamie Crowhurst to stretch, grab the ball and run the no6 out for 0. Robert Broaders brought on for Stuart after 6 overs bowled well for his 4 over spell but couldn’t find the breakthrough but stemmed the runs from Woodfords’ number 5. Matt Lamming was brought into the attack in his place and got his man the second over, with a lovely turning ball, edged and caught by the diving Steve Prichard, showing the new gloves off in spectacular style. After Pete’s wonderful spell, Josh returned to the attack, settling back into a great line again and instantly getting reward clean bowling Woodford’s number 8, Tom Yates brought on for Matt after a couple of looseners found a wonderful ball swinging and pitching to remove their no5 for 52 clean bowled. With only 10 players in their lineup, Josh had the chance to get them all out but their tail end batsmen elected to leave or block the remaining balls. 135 to chase for the batsmen after tea.
Matt Lamming and Tom Yates opened and in superb fashion, never looking in trouble throughout their innings, Tom being the aggresser whilst Matt provided great support to keep the runs flowing, one massive six from Tom was a particular highlight, finding its way half way across the car park, WOOF!! Lovely shots played by both batsmen throughout, With Woodford beginning to look deflated in the field 1s and 2s were taken at will and Tom brought his 50 up first, shortly followed by the 100 partnership. With 36 needed the batsmen remained patient but kept the scoreboard ticking, the final note being another huge 6 but this time from Matty to win the game and also bringing up a very much deserved 50! 76 for Tom and 55 for Lammo, 135 chased down without the loss of a wicket. All round fantastic team performance again, 50/50 points for the season. Next weekend we travel to Brooklands for game number 3 and will hope to continue the great form. #big25 #50outof50 #nowwegoagain
